She had this manager who was older than me, and the guy my ex had an affair with had been a bit older. It damages you, and you start thinking the worst of people. But it does stuff to you that you don’t realise at first. When you’re in a marriage, you can’t leave just because you’re arguing all the time. It’s like those painters, sometimes you see paintings and then if you scan it you can see that they’ve had other paintings underneath and they’ve gone over it, it’s like that, expect we’re not Leonardo Da Vinci. “in the dark” was a different song when we went into the studio, it was a completely different vibe and then we rewrote it and now it’s a whole different song that is the same tempo as the song that was there before. I’m sure it’ll take people a minute to get it, but I have so much confidence in the album in general that I know they’ll come around. No-one wants to completely alienate their existing fans. We try not to let what people might expect from us affect us creatively, but at the same time, we do still like heavy music. It’s not a healthy mind-set to be in when you’re trying to write music. We don’t worry about what people might think of that. And while it’s poppy, it’s still quite dark. We wanted to make sure it was positioned quite early in the record so it wouldn’t get lost. It’s from the perspective of someone who’s found out their lover’s been cheating. Or at least it’s not very heavy, or got rock guitars.
